Back to Basics

When it comes to news photography, regardless of your skill level or camera quality, there are five shots that anyone can take to elevate their status from news photographer zero to news photographer hero. These shots, collectively known as the five-shot rule, include:

  • Face Close-Up Shot
  • Hands Close-Up Shot
  • Wide Shot
  • Over-the-Shoulder Shot
  • A shot from an interesting perspective.

Below, in order, are my examples of the five-shot rule.

Wedemeyer anxiously awaits turning the page as she continues to read the magazine.

Wedemeyer relishes in the quiet escape of her bedroom as she flips through the October Cosmopolitan Magazine.

Cosmopolitan Magazine teaches Wedemeyer the art of a "bitch out."

Although not greater in width than her own hand, Wedemeyer takes her time as she reads Cosmopolitan cover to cover.
